Diabetes and sleep problems often go hand in hand because as the amount of sleep decreases, blood sugar increases, escalating the issue. Lack of sleep has been shown to increase blood sugar levels and the risk of diabetic issues. A good night’s sleep is important for our hormones to regulate a large number of the body’s processes, such as appetite, weight control and the immune system.
Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose (blood sugar) is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy. Normally, the pancreas (a gland) releases insulin (hormone) to help your body store and use the sugar from the food you take. Sometimes your body doesn’t make sufficient or any—insulin or doesn’t respond to insulin appropriately.
Both High and Low blood glucose levels, (hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia), can have a negative impact upon your sleep.
High blood sugar levels: HYPERGLYCEMIA
People with high blood sugar levels may need to go to toilet too many times during a night and this can have a negative impact on their ability to get a good night’s sleep. When your blood sugar is really high, your kidneys will try to get rid of it by removing it from the body via urination.
High blood sugar levels also make it less comfortable for you to sleep by feelings of warmness and irritability.
Low Blood Sugar – HYPOGLYCEMIA
Low blood sugar levels overnight can disrupt your sleep pattern and lead to difficulty waking in the morning and tiredness through the day. Waking up sweating is the most common symptom of the night time hypoglycemia. Severe low blood sugar is sometimes called insulin shock. Untreated, it can be very dangerous.
The following may help to promote better sleep:
- Keep your blood glucose under control
- Incorporating a period of exercise into each day
- Ensure your bed is large and comfortable enough , cool and well ventilated
- Ensure your room is dark and free from noise
- Stick to a regular bed time
